Video Poker Company Bomb Planted By Mob

By Brian Chan on September 4, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -- The explosion of a bomb in the office of a video poker company has been linked to organized crime. The blast in the suburban Chicago headquarters of C&S Coin Operated Amusements was alleged set off by Samuel Volpendesto and Mark Polchan. Volpendesto had bragged of mob ties.

Indiana locksmith Kyle Knight admitted he had supplied explosive powder and a fuse to Volpendesto, with whom Knight had previously pulled off jewelry store heists. Mob leaders apparently wanted to send a message to the video poker purveyors that gambling in the Chicago area was a mob business.

Volpendesto was a owner and operator of area strip clubs.

As gambling laws change and legal gambling avenues arise, another source of money for organized crime is slowly being phased out. With the ability to gamble openly and with licensed operators, patrons no longer need to deal with shady outfits, whose reputation for honest games and payouts is less than stellar.

No matter what threats may be issued by criminals, the future of gambling nationwide is that of an aboveboard, respectable business providing a strong source of revenue and jobs to municipalities. The days of secret doorways and hidden machines are fading fast.
