Galveston Pushes Texas for Casino Gambling
GALVESTON, TEXAS --
The devastation wreaked by Hurricane Ike this summer on Galveston will take time and money to repair, and area residents want the state of Texas to allow casino gambling to help fund the recovery.
Sam Houston Race Park is continuing efforts to repair its facility from heavy damage sustained during the storm, and racing officials say slots would go a long way to nursing the track back to health. Hundreds of local jobs depend on the horse racing site, and the economic impact of the racing season cannot be discounted in the wake of Ike.
A new roof will soon be installed, replacing the ravaged one from Ike, and then officials hope the state will allow voters to decide the legality of gambling, giving the track a chance to immediately install slots and eye the construction of a full-scale casino.
Revenues from slots and gambling could be earmarked to help restore the historic areas of Galveston ruined by the passing of the hurricane, and also provide basic services for an area without much tax base on which to currently draw.
Supporters of casino gambling have noted the new state Speaker of the House, Joe Strauss, comes from a family involved in horse racing and may hopefully be an ally in leading gambling legislation through the twists and turns of Texas politics.
