Frank Says Markup of Online Gambling Bill Imminent
WASHINGTON, D.C. --
It appears the long wait for the advancement of Barney Frank's online gambling bill may finally be over. Frank announced during this week's hearing for Jim McDermott's bill allocating taxes from Internet gaming that the Frank measure may be marked up in July.
Online casino enthusiasts have been waiting for over a year, since the rumored hearing after Easter 2009, to witness a discussion in the House Financial Services Committee on Frank's bill. But several postponements have occurred, with reasons running from the busy calendar of the committee most tied to the economic crisis, to a double-booking on Frank's itinerary.
The process has been so slow that it seems inevitable the implementation of the UIGEA will take place before action is taken on the Internet gambling measure. Even after a six-month reprieve by Treasury officials, financial institutions will still be held to the rules under the UIGEA as of June 1st.
Frank said at the hearing before the Ways and Means Committee not only would his bill soon reach markup, but that the UIGEA onbly passed through sneaky politics, disguising the online gambling ban amongst homeland security measures.
"Because we had a Republican leader who was intent on running for President, he got that bill added onto a bill in the Senate to which it was unrelated," Frank told the committee. His bill would satisfy both those eager for new massive federal revenues, as well as those seeking to limit government interference in everyday life.
