Compulsive Gambling Attorney Loses Suit and Freedom
ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY --
A New York attorney who sued several casinos for allowing to play while she lost almost a million dollars is heading to jail. Arelia Taveras not only lost her lawsuit, but also pled guilty to raiding clients' escrow accounts to finance her gambling spree.
Taveras made news last spring when she sued the Trump casinos, Resorts, the Tropicana Casino, and Bally's Casino in Atlantic City, as well as the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas, for not preventing her from gambling. She claimed they knew she was a problem gambler and should have cut her off.
But a judge dismissed the suit, saying she could not put the burden of responsibility for her actions on the casinos.
Taveras had embezzled client money to fund her gaming exploits, and was subsequently disbarred for her crimes.
Her case coincides with others around the US, in which courts have consistently found casinos and gambling operations have no obligation to protect customers from themselves.
Taveras' plea this week means a judge will sentence her sometime next month. The former lawyer could receive as much as nine years in prison.
