Parkinson's Drug Linked Again to Problem Gambling
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
A drug which had been commonly prescribed as a treatment for Parkinson's Disease is linked once again to compulsive gambling in incidents which are consistent with several recent studies indicating problem gambling is a symptom of a physiological brain disorder.
Randolph Simens, a 55-year-old former Wall Street banker, filed suit against pharmaceutical manufacturers Boehringer Ingelheim, Pfizer, and Pharmacia & Upjohn, charging them with negligence, breach of warranty, and negligent misrepresentation.
Simens said that after being prescribed the drug Mirapex, in which the companies were involved, for his Parkinson's, he quickly found his occasional recreation gambling to have become all-night online gambling sessions and frequent trips to casinos. Mirapex has been linked to problem gambling in several past cases.
Simens noted that after he read of cases of addictive gamblers having had problems with Mirapex, he stopped taking the drug, and within days he no longer had the uncontrollable compulsions he had felt. Unfortunately, he lost over $3 million in gambling funds while on the drug.
Pfizer no longer markets Mirapex, but it is still sold in the U.S., and used to treat restless leg syndrome as well as Parkinson's. Simens wants the companies to pay him back his losses, alleging in the suit that the manufacturers had an obligation to test their product and develop a pill with adequate warnings and a reasonable expectation against unknown side effects.
The nature of a drug causing problem gambling lies totally within the results of international tests that have shown problem gambling to be the result of underlying physical differences in brain structure and DNA, and not a psychological problem caused by the temptation of gambling proliferation.
