Federal Court Stops Delaware Sports Gambling Plan
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA --
Delaware's plans to start accepting single-game betting on sports events next week were abruptly derailed as the US Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the lottery program violates a federal ban. Despite being grandfathered in as one of four states allowed to host sports betting, Delaware was informed it could not expand the type of gaming beyond the limited parlay version offered before the ban passed.
"Obviously I'm disappointed, but the bottom line is that Delaware is still the only state east of the Mississippi that can offer this sports betting product on NFL games," Governor Jack Markell said.
But the parlay betting the state will offer is far less potentially lucrative than the single-game betting denied by the court. Markell said his legal team will examine options, including possibly an appeal to the US Supreme Court.
The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 forbids sports gambling in all states, except four that had pre-existing laws allowing such betting. Nevada, Montana, Oregon, and Delaware all received exemptions, although yesterday's ruling severely limits the options available to the states other than Nevada.
The sports leagues in the US contend sports gambling would erode public confidence in game results. But the essential result is to keep sports betting in the hands of organized crime, rather than allowing regulated gambling controlled by the state.
