Delaware Reaches Sports Betting Compromise
DOVER, DELAWARE --
After months of heralding the return of legal sports betting to Delaware, it looked this week like the measure proposed by Governor Jack Markell would be shot down. The state House failed to reach the sixty percent majority needed to advance the bill Wednesday, but changes in the proposal to allow state-sponsored sports gambling caused a rethinking, and the bill easily moved forward Friday.
An unlikely set of foes for the expanded gambling issue had been the state's three racetrack casinos. The bill included a raise in taxation for racino slots, and did not adequately share the sports wagering income, track officials said.
So, seeing the bill about to disappear in flames, supporters amended the measure to encourage track industry members to get behind the legislation. The new version will promise to bring table gaming to the racinos, plus grant them a bigger share of the sports revenue.
Some were still discouraged by the deal.
"The thought of getting table games ands sports betting together, that seems wonderful," said Dover Downs President and CEO Ed Sutor, "But at this price, we would rather not have either of those."
Still, enough lawmakers saw the change as significant enough to move the vote for the bill from 26-15 to 30-4, passing easily and moving to the next battle in the Senate.
