Indiana Gambling Jackpots Withheld for Child Support
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA --
A bill before the Indiana legislature would require casinos to check winners' names against a database of deadbeat dads and moms, and withhold any child support before paying out. Governor Mitch Daniels is behind the measure, which keeps gambling patrons from collecting winnings until casinos verify there is no child support due.
The minimum won on a single game or bet to force the casino to check the records would be $1200. The list of deadbeats would include anyone more than $2000 behind in payments.
State records show that over 165,000 parents owe over $2 billion in back child support in Indiana.
Gaming industry lobbyists oppose the law, saying it would be impossible to properly enforce without inconveniencing innocent casino patrons. They claim the measure would make the gambling industry the enforcerer of child and family laws.
Beside the gambling and casino aspects, the bill would also allow the state to withhold licensing for certain professional occupations for deadbeats, and demand that custodial households try to help determine parentage or sacrifice gaovernment aid.
