Cyprus Asks EC Permission to Regulate Online Gambling
NICOSIA, CYPRUS --
European nations are in disarray over the communal terms regarding online casinos. The latest situation come from the island of Cyprus, where the government contends billions in revenue is being lost to unregulated online gambling and illegal land casinos.
Cypriot legislators have written a bill to propose the country be given an EU exception to control gambling in the country. The bill would allow Cyprus to restrict the movement of gaming funds onto and off of the island.
The European Union has already leveled charges against ten other member nations for failing to abide by Union agreements regarding trade in services when they apply to gaming.
Police would like a new law increasing penalties for operating illegal gambling venues. At present, the only penalty is a small fine. Servers and computers are confiscated, only to be replaced by fresh equipment overnight.
“It pains us to see that Cyprus has become a free-for-all when it comes to illegal gambling,” said chairman of the House Institutions Committee Ricos Erotokritou.
A resolution by the European Commission recognizing the special circumstances regarding Internet gambling passed last month. It may make the Cyprus bill easier to negotiate through EU legal labyrinths.
