Corzine Campaigns on New Jersey Sports Gambling
TRENTON, NEW JERSEY --
Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey began what is anticipated to be a serious struggle for re-election by taking a stand for bringing sports betting to the state. Corzine said he will join state Senator Raymond Lesniak in a suit against the federal government for not giving all the states identical privileges concerning sports wagering.
Corzine, a Democrat, is expected to have a highly contested gubernatorial contest against Republican challenger Christopher J. Christie. In early polls, Christie holds a very slight lead over Corzine.
While Christie's policies on gambling are not well known, he is considered a moderate. However, his experience also comes from spending the last seven years as a US Attorney, a time during which persecution of online gambling was a fundamental part of Department of Justice operating procedure.
Corzine, meanwhile, has apparently decided that backing the call for legal sports wagering is going to be a popular political stand in Atlantic City and the rest of the state. Needing to come out strongly on issues that resonate with the public, Corzine has led off with sports betting.
"If one state is allowed is allowed to legalize betting on sports events, all states should be allowed the same opportunity," Corzine said in a statement, adding that the 1992 federal law that allows only Delaware, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon to host legal sports gambling "unconstitutionally regulates commerce and discriminates against states where sports betting is forbidden."
