Massachusetts Sports Gambling Ring Busted
BOSTON, MA --
Police have arrested over 24 men in Massachusetts involved in an illegal sports gambling operation, ending a month's long investigation into organized crime in the area. The men used sophisticated techniques to generate millions of dollars annually.
The leader of the gang, Jesus Reynoso, also known as 'Marcos', is faced with charges that could land him in prision for up to 15 years.
According to District Attorney Daniel Conley, "the gang was fraught with violence and unfair practices, these people were not nice guys".
A spokesman for the District Attorney's office claims it is the largest seizure of electronic evidence in Massachusetts history. Over 30 laptops were confiscated and will be taken-in for analysis by prosecutors.
According to Conley's office, the Boston Police Department Special Investigations Unit began coordinating what would become Operation Barbershop after an armed robbery of one of the front businesses in January 2007.
The team made money by operating illegal lotteries and sports betting associations.
