Big Ten Clears Itself of Gambling Scandal

By Brian Chan on August 10, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! COLUMBUS, OHIO -- The Big Ten conducted an internal investigation into football games refereed by disgraced official Steve Pamon, and found that nothing inappropriate had occurred. In doing so, the conference joined Absolute Poker, Ultimate Bet, and David Stern in whistling past the graveyard.

Pamon was revealed by an investigative report by Yahoo! Sports to have a long history of child abuse, sexual harassment, casino gambling, and bankruptcy. Several games last year officiated by Pamon had drawn notice for controversial calls, especially one between Purdue and Penn State. Coach Joe Tiller formally protested the game.

Pamon had been a Big Ten referee since 1988. A neglect to update background checks after initial hirings had led to the conference being ignorant of Pamon's circumstances.

Several other internal gambling scandals have led to behind-doors investigations, and a rush to issue the all's-clear, pushing a public relations agenda rather than delving deeply and transparently into the underlying evidence.

Both poker sites anoounced hey had found only ex-employees had cheated, and now all was well. Stern called Tim Donaghy a "lone gunman", and gave the thumbs-up to his other officials; now the Big Ten pronounces it's games free of a problem.

Just remember to tell that to Joe Tiller, or any other coach who has to watch blatant miscalls change the destiny of a team.
