Alabama Governor Would Rather Beat Gambling Than Join It
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA --
While some state lawmakers want to consider taxing existing gray-area gambling operations to help the serious budget deficit, Alabama Governor Bob Riley wants no part of it. Riley issued an executive order Monday creating a task force under a special prosecutor whose job it will be to examine electronic bingo machines and such throughout the state.
David Barber, previously a county district attorney, was named to head the task force. Barber said, "This task force will be a resource to any law enforcement official who wants to finally crack down on illegal gambling in their community, but maybe hasn't had the manpower or investigative tools to do it."
Riley asserted that he didn't want to use illegal gambling to help pay the state's bills, nor would he consider legalizing gambling. Instead, he said, "We should get rid of illegal gambling for good wherever it exists in Alabama."
No word was heard from the governor on how the state would find funding for the budget. Neither was there an explanation of how the state could afford to spend more money on a task force preventing people from entertaining themselves at electronic bingo.
